Meldahl Hydroelectric

Felicity, Ohio

Overview

In December 2013, Sargent Electric Company was contracted by American Municipal Power, Inc. to perform electrical construction for the new hydroelectric generation plant along the Ohio River. After working with the area’s energy provider on a number of past projects, our team had the advantage. We worked seamlessly with architects, local contractors and engineers to construct the region’s largest hydroelectric plant.

Sargent Electric Company built three miles of 138kV transmission lines from the new lock and dam in Kentucky to an existing 345kV transmission line in Ohio. On the Ohio side, we erected a total of 22 structures, two of which are 250’ lattice tower river-crossing structures. The remaining 20 are steel mono-pole or wood pole “H” structures. We also built a 138kV and a 345kV substation, both which we commissioned, tested and put into service.

Through our positive partnership with city officials, energy providers and engineers, we were able to secure additional projects in Kentucky and West Virginia.

Project Details

Located on both sides of the Ohio River near Felicity, Ohio and Foster, Kentucky, the plant is expected to generate 105 megawatts of clean, zero emission renewable generation to the region. By capacity, it will be the largest hydroelectric plant along the Ohio River.
